If you had placed across, you would have bet one of three amounts, depending on the point: $47 if it was 4/10 ($20 on pass/odds, $27 placing across), $52 if 5/9 ($25 pass/odds, $27 placed), or $56 if 6/8 ($30 pass/odds, $26 placed). If you then do your $5 come bet and 7 out, you lose your pass and odds but win $5 on the come, for a total of $15-$25 loss. If you are doing the pass/come/max odds strategy, your initial pass bet will have between $20 and $30 on it. Let's say that you are playing a $5 minimum, 3/4/5x odds table. It all comes down to when the 7 shows up. Place bets, in my opinion, are more interesting and have a higher upside if you can piggyback on a hot roller, but you also have the potential to lose money faster. Statistically, come bets have a lower house edge and (over the long-term) should help you lose less money.
